Piracicaba, 23rd – Cavendish banana prices remained low in Vale do Ribeira (São Paulo state) last week (May 13th to 17th). The result was a reflection of high supply since the beginning of the month. Thus, as demand is low, producers are unable to fully dispose of the large volume harvested.
According to Hortifruti/Cepea collaborators, this drop in prices usually occurs at this time of year, due to off-season end as well as consumer preference for competing fruits, such as tangerine, persimmon and apple. With an 18% reduction in sales prices of cavendish in Vale do Ribeira, the variety closed with an average of BRL 0,75 per kg.
