Piracicaba, 05th - After more than 20 years of trying, Ecuador was able to send bananas to Brazil in May - the first cargo arrived on May 18th. Data from Aebe (Ecuadorian Banana Exporters Association) shows that 1,144 boxes of 43 kilograms were discharged in Santos port. This import is concerning Brazilian producers due to phytosanitary questions – mainly black Sigatoka and other quarentenary pests.
Aebe intends to send over 100 thousand of tones of bananas to Brazil, and they will focus on premium market. Consequently, this imports may result in more competitiveness with Brazilian growers, mainly from Vale do Ribeira region (São Paulo state) and North of Santa Catarina state – the largest producers of Cavendish variety.
