Piracicaba, 29th – European Union, one of the world's largest banana consumers, has strongly increased imports of Brazilian fresh banana this year (from January to July). Domestic shipments to the destination reached 16 thousand tons, 321% higher than the same period of last year, according to Secex. Revenue, in turn, totalized about $ 7 million (FOB), rising 294% in the same comparison.
This increase in exports was related to the resumption of investments by producers and, consequently, better fruit quality in Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states (the main exporters for the block). Larger investments are due to the return of rainfall which has favored production since last year - increasing the availability and water quality of RN/CE. In addition, European Union had a great demand for banana during this period.
