Piracicaba 25th– In Bom Jesus da Lapa, one of the main producers of bananas in Brazil, 2024 has been a very complicated year, according to agents consulted by Hortifrúti/Cepea. This is because, despite the majority of producers having irrigation, banana plantations started the year stressed by the water crisis and high temperatures in the last quarter of last year (Oct-Nov-Dec) – conditions that returned to the region from May of this year.

The increasing incidence of Panama disease also had a strong impact on local production, especially on the Burro variety, the variety most susceptible to the fungus. In order to contain the spread of the disease, the Cavendish, which is more resistant, has grown in the region. This low production, together with high production costs, especially labor, worries farmers in Bahia about profitability this year.

For 2025, the expectation of local agents is that there will only be an improvement in production if the rains return in the coming months.
