Piracicaba, 03 – Orange crushing was slow at processors in São Paulo State in the off-season period. Only two of the three large-sized processors (one in Araraquara and one in Matão) were operating in March. The other plant, also in Matão, should restart activities in April. In this scenario, for one more year, crushing should continue without interruptions between one crop and the other in Brazil, in order to use all fruits due to the small volume of stocked juice.
In general, the fruits received by processors were restricted to pear and late oranges in the 2016/17 season, but one of the plants started to crush some early oranges from the 2017/18 crop, in cases of early maturation. Most fruits came from the northern region of São Paulo State, where the development of early oranges was more advanced compared to other regions. However, the crushing of fruits from the new season is expected to pick up only in the second fortnight of May.
The average bidding prices of large-sized processors in the spot market in March varied between 18.00 BRL and 20.00 BRL per 40.8-kilo box, harvested and at the processor. In case of smaller-sized processors, remuneration was between 20.00 BRL and 25.00 BRL per box.
Regarding tahiti lime, two processors from São Paulo State were crushing, both small-sized processors. The only large-sized processor that has crushed this year wrapped up activities in February. In March, average prices were 13.57 BRL per 40.8-kilo box, harvested and delivered at the processor.
