Piracicaba, 16 – Prices of all in natura orange varieties surveyed by Cepea in São Paulo reached new nominal records in January/17 – the series started in 1994. High price levels reflect the combination of low supply and firm demand this season (2017/18). Quotes may continue at high levels for citrus growers from SP State, once availability of early oranges may increase only after February.
In January, quotes of pera rio orange averaged 37.53 BRL per 40.8-kilo box, on tree, two-fold the average observed in the same period of 2016 and 14.5% up compared to December/16, in nominal terms. Regarding lime oranges, prices averaged 65.90 BRL per box, 2.1 times higher than that in January/16 and 14.6% up compared to December.
Prices of late oranges reached nominal records last month as well, mainly natal orange, whose values closed at 33.48 BRL per 40.8-kilo box, 2.3 times higher than the average in Jan/16 and 10.6% up compared to Dec/16.
In the first fortnight of February, orange availability was limited to fruits out of the ideal period, mainly pera rio and late oranges, and lime orange – whose supply was almost over in most citrus groves from São Paulo State, as well as valencia oranges. Demand, in turn, kept firm. Between January 31 and February 15, quotes of pear orange averaged 43.65 BRL per 40.8-kilo box, on tree, 25.1% up compared to the previous period.
