Piracicaba, 28th - Agents consulted by Hortifruti/Cepea believe that the melon area should stabilize in Brazil in 2021. In the Vale do São Francisco (region between Bahia and Pernambuco states), it has been attributed to climate uncertainty (the La Niña phenomenon in summer can increase the rains occurrence), and the economy (as the covid-19 pandemic may continue to interfere with the functioning of some sectors).
In Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states where the focus is on the international market, agents even believe that the area can increase in the 2021/22 crop due to the opening of the Chinese market, but for now, the bet is on maintenance, because this scenario will depend on the closing of contracts in early 2021.
