Piracicaba, 6th – The 2023/24 season of industrial grapes in Rio Grande do Sul state is currently in progress. Vineyards are budding, and producers are growing increasingly concerned about potential weather impacts.
The first issue was the lack of cold hours, as the winter this year was less cold than usual. In September, Rio Grande do Sul was hit by a tornado, which had limited impacts on grape production. However, at the end of August, frosts occurred and may affect yield. Bordô grapes were just beginning to bud during the frosts, and the damage might be more significant compared to other varieties.
El Niño is expected to bring above-average rainfall to Rio Grande do Sul. As the rain may coincide with a critical phase of grape development, such as blossom and establishment, it could potentially impact the yield.
