Every year, the Hortifruti/Cepea team attends Hortitec, a horticulture event that  happened from June 22nd to 24th, in Holambra (SP), Brazil.
This year the team released their new web site (www.hfbrasil.org.br), distributed the Hortifruti Brasil magazine and gave lectures for producers who visited the stand.
Among several different topics it was analyzed the actual market scenario and perspectives from the 13 products that Hortifruti/Cepea works with.
Watermelon: The first semester was pointed by low yield in Rio Grande do Sul and a decrease in production in São Paulo state, which resulted in higher prices. The forecast for the second semester is an increase in supply, yield and quality. Therefore, prices shall go down.

Table Grape: The excessive rainfall caused yield reduction in São Paulo, Paraná and São Francisco Valley. As a result, grape prices reached the highest in history last April, but for the next three months a gradual increase in supply and similar prices as to the ones of 2015 are expected.

Mango: The low yield and losses in blossom at the orchards in the North of Minas Gerais and São Francisco Valley made prices increase a lot. However, for the second semester the supply tends to go back to normal and exports will increase.

Apple: The prices are at there highest this season because production is down. Besides that, fruits are smaller, what reduced profitability of growers. This year, imports are increasing and it is one of the major concerns of growers due to competitiveness in the Brazilian market.

Banana: The supply of nanica variety is smaller this year mainly in Ribeira Valley, in São Paulo state, and in the North of Santa Catarina state due to frost in June. The prata variety will probably have a peak of supply between August and October.

Melon: Between February and April, the supply was limited in Brazilian market. So, prices were high. This scenario is caused by rain in January in the São Francisco Valley, the main supplier in a period of high prices. From August on, the supply will increase because the season begins in Rio Grande do Norte/Ceará states.

Papaya: Prices in the first semester of this year were the highest in history. This was caused by the lack of water for irrigation in Espírito Santo state and the South of Bahia, the main suppliers in Brazil. Papaya doesn’t develop well with little water and result in low quality fruit. Exports are at risk because of that.

In general, the 23rd Hortitec was very “fruitful”, in other words, profitable.
