MELON/CEPEA: After Devaluation, Prices in Brazil?s Northeast Begin to Stabilize See photos

Piracicaba  25 th– In Vale do São Francisco (a region located in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Pernambuco), melon prices stabilized during the first week of October. The bulk yellow variety was sold at R$1.70 per kilogram. This price stability indicates that the market seems to be recovering. Despite the good supply of merchandise in the region, there was an improvement in demand for the fruit in some consumer centers, due to hot weather and the beginning of the month.

In the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, prices were also stable. The yellow variety (sizes 5 to 8) was sold at R$ 42.60/box of 13 kilograms (delivered in São Paulo). According to Hortifruti/Cepea agents, there was good demand for the yellow melon that week, while demand for the “Piel de Sapo” variety was lower. As sales did not match the supply of this variety, prices may fall in the coming days. The yellow variety “Piel de Sapo” was sold at R$ 39.00/box of 13 kilograms during the same period.
