Piracicaba, 23 - Rio Grande do Norte/Ceará region is responsible for growing melons to export. The 2017/18 season had a strong start in August – in the first month, Brazil sent a lot of melons abroad because Europes season finished beforehand. Although, low productivity this year - due to lack of water and incidence of leafminer – is limiting shipments, mainly to European Union. Besides that, consumption is usually reduced from September on due to autumn season in North Hemisphere. Thus, between August and October, exportations summed 79.9 thousand tonnes, volume 10% smaller than in the same period of 2016, according to Secex data. The revenue in the first three months of shipments was US$ 60 million, 4.4% lower than in the same period of last year. This scenario resulted in a big supply in Brazilian market, which caused drop in prices.
