Piracicaba, 8th - In September, melon exports from the 2021/22 harvest of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, Brazilian states, increased significantly compared to August. According to the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), a 28-thousand-ton volume was exported in this period, an increase of 951% in the same comparison.
According to agents consulted by Hortifruti/Cepea, this increase is common for September, due to the end of the Spanish harvest, the main export market for Europe – a continent that represents the largest Brazilian destination. However, it is important to note that the high prices of sea freight and cardboard packaging were limiting the exporter's earnings.
Despite this increase compared to August, the volume of exports was 16% lower than in September 2020, still according to Secex. This scenario may be the result of difficulties in negotiations with importers this year, given the high costs of production, packaging and sea freight, which affected the agreement between the parties.
