Piracicaba, 4th - Melon season 2017/18 is near to start in Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states, in Northeast of Brazil. This region is the main supplier of this fruit to international market between September and March every year – when this region is in counter-season, Spain is the main supplier.
In the meanwhile, Brazilian producers are still planting to harvest as from August - at the same time, export also starts. As for exports, growers sign contracts with world players and importers. For this season, contracts indicate that the same volume of 2016/17 may be shipped. On the other hand, importers are skeptical about exchange rate that caused them some losses in the previous season. For exporters, when dollar reaches more than 3 (three) Reals, is more profitable to sell in external market than in domestic one.
