Piracicaba, 18 – Because of rain the year-end melon harvest in São Francisco Valley (Pernambuco and Bahia states) started last week (December 10th to 14th), since small producers were afraid that moisture would affect fruit quality.
As a result, supply increased, pressuring prices down, especially in regional market. However, according to Hortifruti/Cepea collaborators, the biggest problem with this harvest anticipation is that melons will have short shelf-life and become more susceptible to diseases.
