Piracicaba 25th – During the first week of October, the regions of Monte Alto and São José do Rio Pardo (in the Brazilian state of São Paulo) registered further declines in onion prices. This decline was related to the high national supply and the declining quality of São Paulo's produce. The high temperatures affecting São Paulo have accelerated onion maturation, making it necessary to harvest the vegetable early to avoid further damage. Furthermore, the quality decline is related to bulb skin loss, which has also been a factor in pressuring prices downward.
In Monte Alto, the yellow hybrid variety was sold at R$ 0.67 per kilogram to producers, a 20.9% decrease compared to last week. In São José do Rio Pardo, it was sold at R$ 0.65 per kilogram, a 27.8% decrease in the same comparison. According to Hortifruti/Cepea agents, the majority of the onion crops in both of these regions have already been harvested, while the remaining areas should be completed by next week. However, some remaining volumes may be sold late.
