Piracicaba, 6th - Onion prices in Cerrado region (Minas Gerais and Goiás states) remained low during this week (September 3rd to 6 th), due to high national supply. Therefore, the producers’ strategy in Triângulo Mineiro region is to stock onions, in order to avoid selling at low prices.
However, bulbs can be stocked only 10 days because the variety in Minas Gerais is not suitable for storing. Average price fell 12%, closing at BRL 11.12 per box of 20 kg last week (August 27th to 31st).
In Cristalina (Goiás state), harvest has been interrupted for 15 days, since August 20th. The reason was the early harvest between April and May – when bulbs were picked while still not ripe.
Onion national supply will remain high in September. Productivity is good and harvest may continue at “high speed” in main regions. So, onion price tends to be at the same level in the coming weeks.
