Piracicaba, 14 - Onion prices have risen sharply last week (July 03 to 07th) in main producer regions in Brazil. The increase of more than 100% was primarily due to a reduction in national supply, mainly in Northeast: Irecê (Bahia state) and São Francisco Valley (Bahia and Pernambuco state). These regions are with low production, and now, the main suppliers are Goiás, Minas Gerais and São Paulo state. According to Hortifruti/Cepea collaborators, volume tends to be small until October in Northeast regions, which may contribute to higher prices. On the other hand, supply in São Paulo regions will increase in August. Another important factor for the growth is the reduction of 15% in onion area for the second semester in producer regions.
