Piracicaba, 21th – Brazilian medium/high-tech banana area declined slightly in 2019. There was a reduction in area in Minas Gerais state and some areas of Bahia state, as low profitability of prata in 2018 restricted investments in these regions.
In addition, Vale do Ribeira (São Paulo state) was hit by heavy rains, windstorms and hail, which occurred in late 2018 and May 2019, resulting in partial loss of banana plantations in the region.
With decrease in area and lower supply in 2019, prices went up, exceeding the estimated cost of production. However, high availability of second quality fruit during winter limited profitability in the period.
