Piracicaba, 7th – 2019 faced no changes in area from main melon crop (April to July) in Vale do São Francisco (Bahia and Pernambuco states). However, more frequent rain in the period resulted in lower productivity and, consequently, higher prices.
On the other hand, in the main crop of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states (August to March) there was a 12% decrease in area, due to difficulties and prolongation of international contract negotiations, since importers feared that last year's high supply would be repeated. It is noteworthy that, as sea freight has increased considerably this season, exporters have lowered the price of fruit to compensate that.
