Piracicaba, 12th – Brazilian supply of formosa papaya is increasing in the main producing regions since the end of April. As a result, prices for that variety dropped again last week (May 4th to 8th). Producers also reported that this scenario, along with weakened demand by covid-19, resulted in fruit loss.
In Norte de Minas Gerais, formosa was sold by BRL 0.52/kg, down 9% from the previous week. Competition with the low prices of Norte do Espírito Santo and Sul da Bahia also resulted in devaluation – some producers sold by BRL 0.20/kg in this regions.
For the next few weeks, formosa supply will continue high, pressing prices down. Sales can face difficulties, because of covid-19 lockdown and the weakening of the economy.
