Piracicaba 25th – After weeks of falling, papaya prices – for both varieties – rose again in the main producing regions of the country. Part of the increase is due to the reduction in volume caused by crop discards as an attempt by producers to guarantee better prices, which in fact occurred, mainly in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Espírito Santo.
In fact, according to agents consulted by Hortifruti/Cepea in the South of Bahia, the Formosa variety was sold at R$ 1.29 per kilogram in the week of (10/21 to 10/25), a significant increase of 149% compared to the previous week. In the North of Espírito Santo, although the appreciation was lower, prices were 138% above the same period of the previous week, with the fruit being traded at R$ 1.24 per kilogram in the same comparison. For this variety, the harvested volume is expected to gradually reduce in November. Therefore, it is possible that prices will advance again.
In the North of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, discards have not been observed in crops. However, after peak production in the region has passed, crops are in a “neck” period, which favors lower supply for the market. In the state, the Formosa variety was priced at R$ 1.13 per kilogram, an increase of 49% in the same comparison.
Finally, in the case of the Havaí variety, supply remains high in both Bahia and Espírito Santo states. Therefore, even though prices have appreciated, the advance has been less significant, with the fruit being traded on average at R$ 0.50 per kilogram in the same comparison.
