Piracicaba, 16th - Given smaller harvested area, Brazilian supply of papaya decreased in 2022, boosting prices. From January to November/22, havaí papaya type 12 to 18 was sold for BRL 3.06/kg in South of Bahia state, an increase of 168% compared to last year and 240% higher than the production cost – this scenario was observed even with a significant adjustment in costs, resulting from more expensive inputs, machinery and fuels. In Bahian state, the cost of papaya rose 58%, with an average of BRL 1.43/kg (Jan-Nov).
In north of Espírito Santo state, formosa papaya was sold for BRL 2.97/kg, an increase of 152% compared to last year's partial and 163% higher than expenses. Thus, unit profitability was positive in 2022, encouraging producers to invest in new areas and cultural practices. With a possible increase in supply in 2023, especially in the second half of the year, prices may decline.
