Piracicaba, 26th - The first part of the 2022/23 watermelon season in Teixeira de Freitas (Bahia state) started at the end of October and ended in the beginning of December. According to Hortifruti/Cepea collaborators, producers decided to harvest only until this period, with concerns about rains and their impacts on production - as happened last year. In fact, rains occurred in the region during the season, resulting in lower productivity in comparison with the average, but the yield was better than in the same period of 2021.
Concerning profitability, prices were enough to cover production costs, but margins were not high. Despite that, producers are relieved because they did not suffer the same losses as in last season.
Now, producers are focused on the second part of the season. Planting has already started, and harvest may start in February.
